How Sleep Cycles Change With Age

How sleep cycles change with age is easier to understand when you separate three things: sleep stages, total sleep time, and the timing of your sleep. This guide shows what changes across life and what those changes mean when you plan a bedtime.

  1. Newborns

    More REM sleep

    Sleep is spread over the day and night. Feeding and naps are part of the picture, so one overnight cycle count is not a useful planning goal.

  2. Early childhood

    Deep sleep peaks

    The amount of slow-wave, or deep, sleep reaches its highest level in early childhood.

  3. Teen years

    Deep sleep declines

    Deep sleep drops sharply through adolescence. That change does not mean a teenager should use an adult sleep-duration target.

  4. Adulthood and later life

    Sleep keeps changing

    Deep sleep continues to decline through adulthood. Older adults may also find that their preferred bedtime and wake time move earlier.

Sleep cycle length is not a fixed number for each age

A sleep cycle is a sequence of non-REM and REM sleep. The NIH describes cycles restarting about every 80 to 100 minutes, with more deep sleep early in the night and more REM later. A bedtime entered into a calculator is not a measurement of those stages. See how sleep stages are measured.

For babies, an adult-length cycle is a poor model. The National Academies sleep physiology review describes a typical cycle of about 50 minutes at three months. That is a population observation, not a timer for feeding, naps, or waking a baby.

Keep three labels separate when comparing a chart or app:

Sleep duration
How long you sleep in total.
Cycle length
How long one sequence of sleep stages takes.
Sleep timing
When you go to bed and get up.

Turn age guidance into a useful bedtime

The CDC recommendations by age give school-age children 9 to 12 hours, teens 8 to 10 hours, and adults aged 18 to 60 at least 7 hours. Younger children's totals include naps. These are duration recommendations, not required cycle counts.

  1. Start with the time you need to wake up.
  2. Choose a sleep-duration target within the guidance for your age.
  3. Subtract that duration and the time you expect to take to fall asleep.
Worked example: A teen planning nine hours of sleep before a 7:00 a.m. wake time, with 15 minutes to fall asleep, would get into bed at 9:45 p.m. This is a scheduling example, not a prediction of the stage they will wake from.

Use stage numbers as context

Age-based averages do not establish a personal deep-sleep or REM target. Avoid changing your alarm just to make a tracker score or a cycle count look better. If you are regularly tired despite enough time for sleep, or have ongoing sleep problems, discuss them with a healthcare professional.
